The Comprehensive Guide to Cosmetic Acupuncture

The Comprehensive Guide to Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial rejuvenation acupuncture, is a natural, non-invasive method that combines the wisdom of Chinese Medicine with modern beauty needs. If you are looking for a natural alternative to ageing instead of botox, read this guide as it covers everything you need to know about this ancient practice, from how it works to its benefits, risks, and what to expect during treatment.

What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is an extension of traditional acupuncture that focuses on improving the appearance of the skin and overall facial aesthetics. By using tiny, hair-thin needles on specific points of the face and body, practitioners stimulate the skin's natural healing and rejuvenation processes.

How is it different to cosmetic dry needling?

This treatment isn’t just about enhancing the skin and beauty; it’s grounded in Chinese Medicine principles, which view the body as an interconnected system. In cosmetic acupuncture we aim to treat the underlying causes of aging and skin issues by restoring balance to the body. That’s why we also do body acupuncture points in a session, to work on digestion, stress and balance hormones etc.

How Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Work?

Cosmetic acupuncture works by stimulating the flow of Qi and blood circulation to the face, which boosts the skin's natural ability to heal and renew itself. The insertion of acupuncture needles at specific points helps:

✿ Increase collagen production: Collagen is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and smoothness. Cosmetic acupuncture encourages collagen synthesis, which helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines.

✿ Enhance blood circulation: Improved circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the skin, resulting in a more radiant complexion and reduced puffiness.

✿ Balance skin moisture levels: By promoting healthy circulation, cosmetic acupuncture can help balance dry or oily skin types.

✿ Tone facial muscles: Acupuncture can help tone and relax facial muscles, reducing sagging and improving skin firmness.

✿ Reduce stress: Stress is a major contributor to premature aging. Acupuncture helps regulate stress hormones, improving overall well-being and skin health.

Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture

Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Cosmetic acupuncture smooths out fine lines and softens deeper wrinkles by stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Lifts and Firms Sagging Skin

The treatment helps tighten loose skin, particularly around the jawline, eyes, and neck, offering a natural facelift effect.

Improves Skin Texture and Tone

By boosting blood circulation, cosmetic acupuncture enhances skin tone, making it appear more even and vibrant.

Reduces Puffiness and Dark Circles

It helps drain excess fluids and reduce inflammation, minimising puffiness and the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Facial cupping may also can help detox the skin and lessen the appearance of dark circles.

Clears Acne and Other Skin Conditions

Cosmetic acupuncture can be effective for reducing acne, rosacea, and eczema by balancing hormones and improving circulation to the skin.

Promotes Overall Health and Wellness

Since cosmetic acupuncture is rooted in TCM, it addresses internal imbalances that contribute to aging. This means the treatment can improve digestion, reduce stress, and enhance sleep, leading to better skin and overall vitality.

What to Expect During a Cosmetic Acupuncture Treatment

How long is a session?

An initial cosmetic acupuncture session is 60 mins, and a return session is 45 mins.

Consultation

Before starting, your acupuncturist will ask about your health history, lifestyle, and skin concerns to understand the root causes of any imbalances. Just like a general Chinese Medicine appointment, we will take your pulse and look at your tongue to access your overall health. This is because we also put body acupuncture points in during a facial acupuncture treatment. So we are treating you inside out! We may begin by placing needles in specific points on your body, particularly on the legs, arms, and torso.

Facial Acupuncture

Very fine needles are inserted into the skin on the face, targeting areas where wrinkles, sagging, or acne are present. The needles are typically left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Post-Treatment Care

After the needles are removed, you will receive facial gua sha, facial cupping, to further enhance circulation, soften tension and promote lymphatic drainage. They may also recommend lifestyle changes or herbal supplements to support your skin and overall health.

Optional add on - Express facial

At Loeda we have the option for an express 15 min facial. This treatment is an optional add on.

How many facial acupuncture sessions are needed?

The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual and their skin concerns. Generally, a course of 10-12 treatments is recommended to achieve noticeable and lasting results. After that, maintenance sessions every 4-6 weeks can help prolong the benefits. Results can often be seen after the first few treatments, but the effects accumulate over time. A rule of thumb is: For best results - twice a week for 6-8 weeks if under 30, or weekly for 8-12 weeks if over 30.

Is Cosmetic Acupuncture Safe?

Cosmetic acupuncture is generally considered safe for most people when performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner. Since it uses very fine, sterile needles, the risk of side effects is minimal. However, some people may experience mild bruising or redness at the needle insertion points, which usually resolves within a few days.

Who Should Avoid Cosmetic Acupuncture?

While cosmetic acupuncture is safe for many, it may not be suitable for everyone. Avoid this treatment if you:

✿ Experience migraines/headaches (facial acupuncture may trigger a headache)

✿ Have a blood clotting disorder or take blood thinners

✿ Are pregnant

✿ Have uncontrolled high blood pressure

✿ Have a skin infection or open wounds on the face

✿ Have severe acne with cysts
