Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage

How manual lymphatic drainage massage began…

The Vodders' journey began in the early 1930s when Emil Vodder, a naturopath, and his wife Estrid, a naturopath and physiotherapist, were living in Cannes, France. Emil had been conducting research on the lymphatic system and its role in health and illness. During this time, they made a serendipitous discovery. While performing a neck massage on a patient with chronic cold symptoms, Emil noticed peculiar lymph nodes in the neck. Intrigued, he applied gentle, rhythmic strokes to stimulate lymph flow in the neck area, and to their amazement, the patient's symptoms improved significantly…

…Inspired by this unexpected success, the Vodders began further research into the lymphatic system and developed a unique method of gentle manual massage to encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid. They initially named their technique "Drainage Lymphatique" but later referred to it as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).

The Vodder’s gained recognition innovative approach to lymphatic therapy

In the 1930s, they moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, and continued refining their MLD technique. They also began to train healthcare professionals, including physical therapists and massage therapists, in the method. Over time, the Vodders gained recognition for their innovative approach to lymphatic therapy.

Their groundbreaking work was further validated when MLD became an integral part of lymphedema management. Lymphedema, characterised by localised swelling due to lymphatic system dysfunction, found significant relief and improvement through MLD sessions. The Vodders' contributions to the field of lymphatic therapy have since earned them global acclaim.
